Learn to Skate

South Metro Sports Learn to Skate is a United States Figure Skating Basic Skills program. The Learn to Skate USA program is a nationally recognized skating program designed to serve the needs of both recreational and competitive skaters. South Metro Sports Learn to Skate offers a variety of classes for all ages and abilities. Join the Fun!

Class Information:

Lessons are 45 minutes once a week offered on Tuesday afternoon, Wednesday evening, and Saturday morning.  Each session of lessons runs for 7 weeks.  Cost for the 7 week session is $112 (BUT if you register early, BEFORE 1 week prior to the first lesson of the session, you pay the early registration cost of $98).  This price includes the ice time, the lesson, and skate rental.  Please arrive 15 minutes prior to class to fit skates and prepare for class.  On the first day of class skaters will meet off ice with their class instructors.  

Skaters who have never taken lessons before will begin with Snowplow Sam 1, Basic Skills 1, or Adult Basic Skills 1, depending on their age.  Skaters will be evaluated on the last day of the 7 week session to determine skill mastery in their current level and this will determine their progression to the next level.

Pre-registration is required (online registration for the class must be received prior to the first day of class).
Refunds are not available.  1 make-up class is permitted per skater per session.

Step 1. Register for classes via the links below. Choose your level, class date, and fill in the online registration form.  

Step 2. Go to learntoskateusa.com and sign-up for your Learn to Skate USA membership for $16 (plus processing fee). You will receive a confirmation email with your membership number and a welcome email. Print or bring your membership number on the first day of class. Your Learn to Skate USA registration is a one-time yearly fee and a year-long membership (June - May).  Learn to Skate USA members will receive welcome packets that will be mailed directly to the member’s household including their membership card, record book, new parent handbook and a Learn to Skate USA magazine.

Skating Levels: 

Snowplow Sam 1-4

The Snowplow Sam levels are designed to help the preschool-age skater develop preliminary coordination and strength to maneuver on the ice.  There are 4 levels of Snowplow Sam.  After completing the first level the skater will progress to the subsequent levels.   Snowplow Sam is for skaters ages 3-5.  CLASSES OFFERED: Tuesdays 12:45pm, Wednesdays 5:15pm, and Saturdays 10:30am.

Basic Skills 1-6

The Basic Skills are the fundamentals of the sport.  These six levels of the program introduce the fundamental moves: forward skating, backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers, turns.  Upon completion of the Basic 1-6 levels, skaters will have a basic knowledge of the sport, enabling them to advance to more specialized areas of skating.   After completing the first level skaters will progress to the subsequent levels.   For skaters age 6-16.  CLASSES OFFERED: Tuesdays 1:30pm, Wednesdays 5:15pm, and Saturdays 10:30am.

Pre-Free Skate - Free Skate 1-4

Each Free Skate level is divided into four sections, moves in the field, spins, dance/footwork sections, and jumps.  The Free Skate levels are designed to give skaters a strong foundation on which to build their skills.  This is the point where the skater can choose to pursue a recreational or competitive approach to the sport of skating. For skaters of any age that have passed Basic 1-6. CLASSES OFFERED: Wednesdays 5:15pm.

Adult Basic Skills 1-6

The Adult curriculum is designed for the beginner adult skater.  It will promote physical fitness, improve balance and coordination while teaching proper skating techniques.  Divided into six levels, adult skaters will progress at an individual rate while being challenged and motivated.  For skaters ages 17 & up.  CLASSES OFFERED: Tuesdays 12:00pm, Wednesdays 5:15pm

Hockey 1-4  

The Hockey curriculum is designed to teach the fundamentals of hockey skating.  Skaters will learn how to maneuver faster and be more agile on the ice.  Proper skating techniques are the primary focus of the levels. Skaters will learn the fundamentals of skating to become successful hockey skaters.  All elements will be taught without a stick and puck.  Hockey helmets and gloves are recommended. Full equipment is not necessary. It is recommended for skaters who have never been on the ice before to complete Snowplow Sam 1-4 or Basic Skills 1 before enrolling in Hockey 1. CLASSES OFFERED: Wednesdays 5:15pm and Saturdays 10:30am.

What to Wear

  • Single blade figure skates or hockey skates (available for rental; included with class registration)
  • Comfortable, flexible, warm clothing. 
  • Long pants or tights are required. 
  • Gloves and hats are strongly recommended. 
  • Helmets are strongly encouraged for beginner skaters. Bicycle or hockey helmets are permitted.

Private Lessons

Private lessons are available at South Metro Sports for skaters interested in one-on-one instruction.  South Metro Sports has a staff of professionals available for private lessons in basic skating, beginning freestyle or competitive freestyle, and power skating for figure skaters and hockey players.  If you are intrested in private lessons, please contact Stacy Lee at stacy@smetrosports.com
